CranioSacral Therapy for TMJ
Bodywork can relieve pain and reduce tension in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. If you have a chronically tight jaw, or grind and clench your teeth in your sleep, this type of session is for you as a complement to whatever medical and/or dental care you are receiving.
The temporomandibular joint is one of the most active joints in the body since every time we bite down, chew food, talk or swallow we activate it.
This massage can include intra-oral work where the practitioner uses a gloved finger inside the mouth to massage the chewing muscles from inside the cheek. I don't rush into this. Typically it may be recommended after one or two sessions when the surrounding external areas have already been released.
I also offer suggestions for self-massage -- self-care techniques that clients can do at home -- between sessions.
A Wonderful Adjunct To Dental Work
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, a mouth guard is commonly prescribed as a treatment for TMJ Disorder (TMD). This treatment helps protect teeth from the damage grinding can cause during sleep, but it doesn't affect the tension, nor the symptoms tension creates.
Massage therapy can be a welcome ally. Soft-tissue work can assist the body in integrating the dental work and allow for a more successful result.Call today to schedule a session to take care of yourself.Graphic below shows several potential related symptoms that arise with TMJ.
